From ESPN: Four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon was fined $100,000, docked 25 points and placed on probation for the remainder of the season on Monday.
The penalties came for intentionally wrecking Clint Bowyer late in Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway.
The incident left Bowyer with a 28th-place finish, eliminating him from contention for the championship with one race remaining.
Also, Rick Hendrick was docked 25 owner points and Alan Gustafson was
placed on probation for the remainder of the year under the rule that
stipulates the crew chief is responsible for his driver and team members
during a race event.
Bowyer's crew chief, Brian Pattie, was fined $25,000 and placed on probation through Dec. 31.
Members of each team were involved in a scuffle on pit road and in the garage after the wreck.
In an unrelated event to the Gordon-Bowyer incident, points leader Brad Keselowski was fined $25,000 for having a cellphone -- it falls into the category of an onboard computer -- in his car. http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/cup/story/_/id/8625100/jeff-gordon-docked-25-points-wrecking-clint-bowyer-phoenix
Why even bother punishing Gordon? Putting him on probation for 1 race? 25 points? That means nothing. $100,000? The guy makes millions each year both in salary, prize money, endorsements and appearances. If you really wanted to punish Gordon, then make him get his hands dirty and have him fix the cars he wrecked, especially Joey Logano's car, who was an innocent bystander in the wreck.
As far as Keslelowski's fine, what BS. He's been doing it all season and now they decide to punish him? I guess because he is a newcomer to Sprint Car and speaks his mind, NASCAR seems to want to harass him and maybe get him off his game before the last race of the season.
NASCAR really has shown it's incompetence this past week.
